Looks like they're doing more than cleaning up. How tall is your house?

It's not very tall at all -- it's one short, 1950s floor at the main entry, with a short, 1950s daylight basement below.

But it's a double lot, and we're on the crest of a steep hill (Beacon Hill!), so there's a big change in elevation from the living room, where I took these photos, to the back of the backyard.

Those are my Ceanothus plants at the top of the rock wall. In the top photo you can see 4 of them, and in the bottom photo you can see 4.5.

Other than that, our backyard is a pretty blank slate. That's why I take pictures of other people's gardens, not my own.

Looks like your neighbor is preparing that lower lot to sell, no?

It's too small for him to sell the back yard separate of the house and front yard, unless the zoning changes for Beacon Hill (1 SFO house per 5000 sq ft., currently). However, his dad has some health issues (eysight) that mean they're probably going to sell the place within the next year or two. In the meantime, he told us he's just going to apply a massive dose of roundup every 6 months so that he doesn't have to weed it. Grrrr...
